Computational Reckoning

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Prismacolor Colored Pencils
Surface: Acid-Free Archival Strathmore Paper
Style: Abstract / Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This elaborately detailed drawing is part of my new Deep Thinkers series, in which various animals are juxtaposed with evidence of human thought, in the form of mathematical equations, quotes, definitions, musical scores, etc. These pieces depict a zen-like transcendent bridge between conceptual thinking and animalistic consciousness. These two contrasts are united by a careful use of color and decorative design. This piece depicts a black and white feathered rooster in front of a series of Japanese mathematical equations. This artwork is entirely hand-drawn using Prismacolor colored pencils. The paper has a 1" border around all four edges to allow for easy matting and framing.

This artwork is available for purchase here.

Rejoicing Quietus

Size: 8" x 10"
Medium: Archival Giclee Print using UV pigmented inks
Surface: Fine Art Watercolor Paper
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This is a highly-detailed, vibrantly colored piece inspired by Mexico's Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. I combined the simplified black outline of a skull with my usual funky abstract style to create an artwork that is vivid, boisterous, and jubilant. I like the paradoxical juxtaposition of the classic image of death and mortality - the skull - portrayed amidst colorful abstract forms and intricate designs, which express the fullness and joy of life.

This auction is for a professionally printed giclee produced from one of my drawings. The print is made with UV pigmented inks that are lightfast and durable, rated to last 150-200 years. The artwork is printed on white, fine art 210 g/m2 matte watercolor paper by Hahnemühle. The paper is acid-free with 50% rag. It has a natural white finish with a slightly-structured soft-textured surface. There is a 1" border around all four edges of the artwork, allowing for easy matting and framing.

This giclee is available for purchase here.

Pin-point

Size: 9" x 12" x .5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This funky abstract painting was inspired by my love of Australian Aboriginal dot painting. With this piece, I wanted to create an environment that had many layers comprised of varying colors and shapes. This painting reminds me of two things: one is an underwater scene of various marine life and bubbles, and the other is an inside look at the body on a cellular level. Either way this painting has a very aqueous feel, in which everything seems to be floating around and intermingling with everything else. The 1.5" sides are painted black, making this painting ready to hang without a frame!

This painting is SOLD.

À l'unisson II

Size: 9" x 12" x .5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This painting is a brightly colored abstract floral explosion! The style is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic, resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. The color scheme of this painting was inspired by the intricate embroidery created by the tribal Kutch people in India. Several metallic paints are used - gold, silver, copper, and turquoise - as decorative accents which reference the tiny mirrors that they embroider into their clothes and tapestries. This painting may be hung with any side facing up! The .5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, so this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame!

Theoria

Size: 6" x 6" x .5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Abstract / Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This whimsical little painting depicts a photorealistically painted head of a sheep with an abstract body made of several layers of bubbly colors... kind of like a funky retro sweater! The background is painted in a contemporary wabi-sabi aesthetic, embodying the traditional Japanese aesthetic of appreciating things that are impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete. The text comes from a dictionary definition for theoretical, theoretician, and theoretics. The dictionary definition is enlarged so that you can't really read too much of it, but there's enough there that you get the gist. All the words that do show are rather abstract in meaning. I painted the words in with black and then went over them with a metallic copper. The picture above shows how nice the copper looks when reflecting the light. The .5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

Toujours Jeune

Size: 18" x 24" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract / Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This highly textured painting is part of my new Synchronal Variety series. These paintings combine decorative abstraction and meticulous photorealism in a contemporary wabi-sabi aesthetic. Wabi-sabi refers to the traditional Japanese aesthetic of appreciating things that are impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete. This ideal manifests itself in the abstract background of the piece, which is comprised of many textural layers, overlaid with delicate designs. A young lamb sits in the bright green grass in front of a background of clovers. The yellow/orange strip at the top is decorated with a pattern of blue and lavender flowers. The pink decorative border separating the top layer from the middle layer is created with soft pink paint textured with tiny glass beads. The bottom maroon layer features a decorative abstract design overlaying a rough sensual texture. The colors and subject matter of this piece create a painting that is joyous and peaceful. If you look carefully at the front view of the painting (above left), you will notice that the digital camera lens causes some bowing to occur, causing what are in reality straight lines to appear slightly curved. The lines delineating each color section of this piece are in fact straight, and not slightly curved as they may appear in these digital photos. The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

I am happy to announce that for the month of March, I am the featured artist on the website http://www.30dayartist.com . That means that everyday I'll be posting images and words about my latest works-in-progress! It's only been 4 days but it's already proving to be an interesting and insightful process, as I'm forced to objectively examine and explain the thought process behind the art-making, which heretofore had been a habitually solipsistic modus operandi. So if you're curious about how the art-making process manifests itself, for instance how a process like evolution of a sheep painting occurs - then check it out!

The Final Sign

The Final Sign

Size: 24" x 48" x .75"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Composite Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This is a painting that I first started in 2002. Last week I decided to do some final touch-ups and put it up for sale! This painting depicts a mysterious old man in front of a crimson/maroon background. He stands behind a grandfather clock which has a rose in the center. This painting deals with the mysteries of time, aging, and the unknown. The piece emits an aura of timelessness and antiquity. The sides are painted to match the burnt yellow-orange border, so this painting is ready to hang without a frame.

Un Plaisir Céleste

Size: 19.5" x 23.5" x .5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas Panel and Wood - Ready to Hang!
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

These digital pictures do not do this painting justice! The central painting measures 16" x 20" and is done with acrylics on canvas panel. There are metallic silver and turquoise highlights throughout the design. Some of the silver highlights were created with small circles of silver paper glued to the surface. The painting is framed inside a custom-painted wooden frame. The background of the frame is painted with a metallic turquoise that reflects the light, and the details on the frame are highlighted with silver and gold paint. This painting is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. This painting creates a sense of energy and exuberance that immediately transforms the atmosphere of any room into one of exotic festivity. This painting may be hung either vertically or horizontally and comes to you ready to hang!

My abstract paintings are very process-oriented and carry a spiritual meaning related to the mystery of existence and a reverence for the unfolding process of life. My abstract art is heavily inspired by my world travels, particularly my visits to remote tribal villages in the Kutch region of India, as well as my visits to temples and roadside shrines in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal.
