Song

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Prismacolor Colored Pencils
Surface:
Style: Composite Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This miniature drawing combines abstract and realist elements in a funky contemporary aesthetic. A small robin perches upon an elaborate crimson and lilac abstract design. The background has an elegant floral abstract motif, upon which is superimposed a section of sheet music from Life is a Dance by Strauss. This colored pencil drawing was crafted with many layers of color. Every spot on this piece was made from at least three layers of color! For example, the blue background was created by an initial layer of Lavender, then a coat of French Grey 10%, then another layer of Lavender, then a layer of Ultramarine, and finally a layer of Non-Photo Blue. All of these layers combine to create a piece that is rich and luminous with color. This drawing is very detailed for it's size, which lends the piece an aura of intimacy.

Guys and Dolls

Guys and Dolls

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Realism / Photorealism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This meticulously detailed miniature painting depicts the exterior of Piccadilly Theatre in London last summer, after the matinee for Guys and Dolls let out. It was a great show, starring the names written across the marquee:

Ewan McGregor, Jane Krakowski, Douglas Hodge, and Jenna Russell

I was fascinated by all the little details in this snapshot, from the architecture to the individual people milling about in the street. I may paint a larger version of this scene someday.

This cityscape painting is so incredibly detailed for such a small size. I've included a photo below of the painting being held in my hand, to provide a sense of scale.

Un Momento

Size: 16" x 20" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Expressionism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This is a highly textured acrylic portrait painted in an expressionistic style, in which a variety of unconventional colors are used to create a sense of energy and intensity. The entire surface of this painting is rough with texture, which adds another dimension to the piece. You can see some close-ups of the texture below. The figure is somewhat androgynous with an ambiguous expression, to allow for free association. The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

À Plusieurs Reprises

Size: 18" x 24" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract / Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This highly textured painting is part of my new Synchronal Variety series. These paintings combine decorative abstraction and meticulous photorealism in a contemporary wabi-sabi aesthetic. Wabi-sabi refers to the traditional Japanese aesthetic of appreciating things that are impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete. This ideal manifests itself in the abstract background of the piece, which is comprised of many textural layers, overlaid with delicate designs. The top white section has a rough texture and is adorned with crimson and metallic turquoise designs. A black and white cow grazes peacefully on a strip of bright green, as a yellow balloon floats into the distance. The colors and subject matter of this piece create a painting that is relaxing and tranquil. If you look carefully at the front view of the painting (above left), you will notice that the digital camera lens causes some bowing to occur, causing what are in reality straight lines to appear slightly curved. The lines delineating each color section of this piece are in fact straight, and not slightly curved as they may appear in these digital photos. The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

Sonido

Size: 8" x 10" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This highly charged painting vibrates with color and detail.
My abstract paintings are very process-oriented. While
working on paintings that are this detailed and colorful, I
become so immersed in the work that applying paint
becomes a meditative process through which I strive to
achieve balance amidst chaos. The colors and designs
arise spontaneously and reflect my interest in tribal and
aboriginal art, specifically in the act of storytelling through
nonrepresentational means. The sides are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly on a wall without a frame!.

Tranquilité Cosmique

The dark purple paint in the top section has a slight iridescent sheen, causing the pigment to subtly reflect light, depending on the lighting conditions. Two horses graze contentedly in this peaceful picture, as three hot air balloons float serenely in the sky above. The soft light blue resembles a calm clear sky and is adorned with an ethereal pattern of flowers and clovers. The colors and subject matter of this piece create a painting that is simultaneously festive and tranquil. The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

Un Más Minuto

Size: 16" x 20" x .75"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This painting is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. Through the frenetic juxtaposition and overlap of colors and patterns, I create a sense of energy and exuberance on the surface that immediately transforms the atmosphere of any room into one of exotic festivity. This painting may be hung with any side facing up! The edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

Già

Size: 18" x 24" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract / Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

Wabi-sabi refers to the traditional Japanese aesthetic of appreciating things that are impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete. This ideal manifests itself in the abstract background of the piece, which is comprised of many textural layers. The very top section has a very tactile, visceral quality formed by layers of paint and tiny glass beads (see a close-up below). A reflective silver design ornaments the bottom section, which has a rough dark maroon texture. Dominating the painting is a San Salvador rock iguana found only (legally) in the Bahamas. The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

Desert Dreaming

Size: 24" x 30" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This painting is a brightly colored abstract floral explosion! The style is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic, resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. The color scheme of this painting was inspired by the intricate embroidery created by the tribal Kutch people in India. Several metallic paints are used - gold, silver, copper, and turquoise - as decorative accents which reference the tiny mirrors that they embroider into their clothes and tapestries. This painting may be hung with any side facing up! The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, so this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame!
