I spent 3 months this summer on a beautiful hilltop in southern France, surrounded by lush views and plenty of nature. My abstract paintings have been heavily influenced by my panoramic surroundings as well as my up-close observations of plants and insect life. I have termed my new series of nature-based abstracts my Anicca series. Anicca is a Pali term meaning impermanence. Like the Impressionists, I am deeply influenced by the changes in the scenery around me caused by the changing position of the sun and atmospheric changes such as wind, rain, and fog. These paintings depict the ever-changing quality of nature; its unpredictability, raw form, and constant flow. This painting depicts the magnificent sunsets as seen from the hill - with dramatic colors and beautiful cloud formations.

On Vacation

On Vacation - Brief Hiatus

Hey folks,

For the next 3 weeks I'll be travelling through Thailand - visiting family and seeing the sights. It'll be my first time visiting Thailand as an adult, so it should be pretty interesting! It is also a topical time to go, given the recent peaceful coup, so I look forward to getting a sense of how it is on the ground.

The last time I was in Thailand I was just a wee little child, and my only memory involves walking barefoot across a wooden bridge, staring intently at my feet to make sure my little toes didn't slip through the spaces between the wooden boards.

This painting is part of my new ZenPop series of artworks which combine abstraction and photorealism within a contemporary pop sensibility, referencing spirituality (in the form of abstraction) with material specificity (in the form of the objects painted over top) . The abstract backgrounds of these paintings are archival giclees of my abstract paintings, using UV Resistant Pigmented Inks on bright white, cotton canvas with an archivability of 100-200 years. This series relies heavily on a stream-of-consciousness method of allowing images to arise and suggest themselves. After selecting an abstract starting point, I then choose a specific image and build the painting around the image - in this case, a fluffy white sheep. After meticulously painting the sheep in a photorealistic style, I added a decorative abstract border to the top and bottom of the painting.

This elaborately detailed drawing is part of my new Deep Thinkers series, in which various animals are juxtaposed with evidence of human thought, in the form of mathematical equations, quotes, definitions, musical scores, etc. These pieces depict a zen-like transcendent bridge between conceptual thinking and animalistic consciousness. These two contrasts are united by a careful use of color and decorative design. This piece depicts a small green frog in front of a set of abstract orbs. The main background contains a black hole equation, and the round white orbs house dictionary excerpts. Although this piece utilizes text as a stylistic device, the original context of the words and equations is rather obscured. This piece has a light-hearted sense of floating whimsicality. This artwork is entirely hand-drawn using Prismacolor colored pencils. The paper has a 1" border around all four edges to allow for easy matting and framing.

I am spending 3 months this summer on a beautiful hilltop in southern France, surrounded by lush views and plenty of nature. My abstract paintings have been heavily influenced by my panoramic surroundings as well as my up-close observations of plants and insect life. I have termed my new series of nature-based abstracts my Anicca series. Anicca is a Sanskrit term meaning impermanence. Like the Impressionists, I am deeply influenced by the changes in the scenery around me caused by the changing position of the sun and atmospheric changes such as wind, rain, and fog. These paintings depict the ever-changing quality of nature; its unpredictability, raw form, and constant flow. This painting depicts a whimsically abstract landscape writhing with color and energy. This piece expresses the concepts of growth, life, and change. From my vantage point on top of this hill at the foothills of a mountain range, I can see many peaks and valleys unfolding all around, filled with trees, rivers, farmland, and villages. I gave this painting a high horizon line to depict the sun rising or setting over a neighboring hill. The various shapes, colors and designs signify all the things populating my line of sight.

This portrait is the latest painting in my Self-Portraits of Sorts series, in which I use my own face as a model or starting point for portraits which evolve into various characters. Usually these quirky portraits don't really look like me nor are they intended to - but this one looks more like me than the others, and is more autobiographical. This portrait shows a close-up of my face, which was done in a colorful expressionistic manner on a textured surface. I used blue to form the main shadows and surrounded the face in white in order to portray a sense of coldness. At the time of painting this in late November, I had just returned to Florida after spending 6 months in England. Being a Florida girl, I wasn't used to the biting English winter, so as the temperature dipped I felt constantly frozen. Needless to say I was grateful to return to the sunny and warm Florida "winter"! This portrait depicts my feeling of being trapped in inescapable coldness. I used warm hues to further model the face, and made the lips a dark plum to symbolize inner warmth prevailing over outer conditions.

This fun little painting depicts a photorealistically painted toy car in a vibrant, multi-colored background. I purchased the toy car last year in an antique toy shop in England, rescuing it from the bargain bin. I made sure to capture the car accurately, with all its little areas of chipped paint. Although this toy car clearly shows signs of age and use, I thought it would be fun to put the word "varoooooooom" on the top and bottom of the painting, to signify the life that a small child must have poured into this car at one time.
