Sub-Rosa

Sub-Rosa

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

I spent 3 months this summer on a beautiful hilltop in southern France, surrounded by lush views and plenty of nature. My abstract paintings have been heavily influenced by these panoramic surroundings as well as my up-close observations of plants and insect life. I have termed my new series of nature-based abstracts my Anicca series. Anicca is a Pali term meaning impermanence. Like the Impressionists, I am deeply influenced by the changes in the scenery around me caused by the changing position of the sun and atmospheric changes such as wind, rain, and fog. These paintings depict the ever-changing quality of nature; its unpredictability, raw form, and constant flow. This painting depicts streams of water flowing through the element of earth - rocks, stones, minerals, and the things that live amongst them - flowers, plants, weeds, bugs. Certain elements of this painting resemble trails made by water or snails.

Ratiocinative Sapience

Ratiocinative Sapience

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Prismacolor Colored Pencils
Surface: Acid-Free Archival Strathmore Paper
Style: Abstract / Photo-Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This elaborately detailed drawing is part of my new Deep Thinkers series, in which various animals are juxtaposed with evidence of human thought, in the form of mathematical equations, quotes, definitions, musical scores, etc. These pieces depict a zen-like transcendent bridge between conceptual thinking and animalistic consciousness. These two contrasts are united by a careful use of color and decorative design. This piece depicts a small green frog in front of a set of abstract orbs. The main background contains a black hole equation, and the round white orbs house dictionary excerpts. Although this piece utilizes text as a stylistic device, the original context of the words and equations is rather obscured. This piece has a light-hearted sense of floating whimsicality. This artwork is entirely hand-drawn using Prismacolor colored pencils. The paper has a 1" border around all four edges to allow for easy matting and framing.

This drawingis available for purchase here.

Supposedly Aerial

Size: 7" x 7" x 1"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

The theme of this highly charged painting is the mythic concept of cosmic origins. This painting is very detailed; writhing with numerous colors and various designs which symbolize the endless energy and flow of spirit and matter. My abstract paintings are very process-oriented and carry a spiritual meaning related to the mystery of existence and a reverence for the unfolding process of life. While working on paintings that are this detailed and colorful, I become so immersed in the work that applying paint becomes a meditative process through which I strive to achieve balance amidst chaos (similar to the concept of mushin). The colors and designs arise spontaneously and reflect my interest in tribal and aboriginal art, specifically in the act of storytelling through nonrepresentational means. My abstract art is also heavily inspired by my world travels, particularly my visits to remote tribal villages in the Kutch region of India, as well as my visits to temples and roadside shrines in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal. This painting continues on all four sides of the canvas, making it ready to hang without a frame!

This painting was sold at a charity art auction for Street Haven, a women's shelter in Toronto.

Underlying Forms
Size: 4 1/8" x 6 9/16"
Medium: Ink
Surface: Book page
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This is an intricately detailed ink drawing done on an antique book page. The page is from a chapter titled "Double Stars" from a book called "The Stars", published in 1927. The book page is slightly yellowed - I'm not sure how well that shows in this scan. The abstract forms of this drawing are elegant and flowing, referencing chimerical organic forms. I like the way the forms cover the words on the page, creating a tension between linear thinking and fanciful forms.
This drawing is SOLD.

Curious Infusion

Size: 7 " x 7" x 1"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This painting is a brightly colored abstract floral explosion! The style is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic, resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. The color scheme of this painting was inspired by the intricate embroidery created by the tribal Kutch people in India. This painting may be hung with any side facing up! The 1" thick edges of this painting are painted with flowers to match the front, so this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame!
