O Sister

Size: 18" x 24"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Pop Expressionism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This highly-textured painting depicts a nun with her eyes gazing upward. She is painted in a colorful expressionistic style. The background is comprised of mainly gold with some copper touches over black. The iridescent quality of the gold paint reflects the light in a most divine way! The picture below shows how dramatic the portrait can look in certain lighting conditions. This is fun pop portrait, not meant to symbolize anything or carry any deep meaning.

Ice Maiden

Ice Maiden

Size: 18" x 24"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Expressionist Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This portrait is the latest painting in my Self-Portraits of Sorts series, in which I use my own face as a model or starting point for portraits which evolve into various characters. Usually these quirky portraits don't really look like me nor are they intended to - but this one looks more like me than the others, and is more autobiographical. This portrait shows a close-up of my face, which was done in a colorful expressionistic manner on a textured surface. I used blue to form the main shadows and surrounded the face in white in order to portray a sense of coldness. At the time of painting this in late November, I had just returned to Florida after spending 6 months in England. Being a Florida girl, I wasn't used to the biting English winter, so as the temperature dipped I felt constantly frozen. Needless to say I was grateful to return to the sunny and warm Florida "winter"! This portrait depicts my feeling of being trapped in inescapable coldness. I used warm hues to further model the face, and made the lips a dark plum to symbolize inner warmth prevailing over outer conditions.

Supplementally Incited

Size: 30" x 40" x 1.5" - HUGE!
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This painting is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. Through the frenetic juxtaposition and overlap of colors and patterns, I create a sense of energy and exuberance on the surface that immediately transforms the atmosphere of any room into one of exotic festivity. This painting may be hung with any side facing up! The 1.5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, making this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame.

Varoom

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Pop / Photorealism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This fun little painting depicts a photorealistically painted toy car in a vibrant, multi-colored background. I purchased the toy car last year in an antique toy shop in England, rescuing it from the bargain bin. I made sure to capture the car accurately, with all its little areas of chipped paint. Although this toy car clearly shows signs of age and use, I thought it would be fun to put the word "varoooooooom" on the top and bottom of the painting, to signify the life that a small child must have poured into this car at one time.

Daylight

Size: 8" x 10"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle

This highly charged painting vibrates with color and detail. My abstract paintings are very process-oriented. While working on paintings that are this detailed and colorful, I become so immersed in the work that applying paint becomes a meditative process through which I strive to achieve balance amidst chaos. The colors and designs arise spontaneously and reflect my interest in tribal and aboriginal art, specifically in the act of storytelling through nonrepresentational means. The colors and designs of this piece whimsically express a feeling of springtime, with clear blue skies and blooming flowers.
