Holiday Hiatus
I hope this post find everyone happy and healthy during this holiday season.
I'm currently working on several new paintings (as per usual!) but I've decided not to post any new work until after the new year, to give myself a brief break from the computer for a couple weeks.
Check back in 2007 for some new art!
Take care... Thaneeya

Axiological Interrogation
Axiological Interrogation
8" x 10"
Acrylic on Wood Panel
This painting is SOLD.
The theme of this highly charged painting is the mythic concept of cosmic origins. This painting is incredibly detailed; writhing with numerous colors and various designs which symbolize the endless energy and flow of spirit and matter. My abstract paintings are very process-oriented and carry a spiritual meaning related to the mystery of existence and a reverence for the unfolding process of life. While working on paintings that are this detailed and colorful, I become so immersed in the work that applying paint becomes a meditative process through which I strive to achieve balance amidst chaos (similar to the concept of mushin). The colors and designs arise spontaneously and reflect my interest in tribal and aboriginal art, specifically in the act of storytelling through nonrepresentational means. My abstract art is also heavily inspired by my world travels, particularly my visits to remote tribal villages in the Kutch region of India, as well as my visits to temples and roadside shrines in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and most recently, Thailand.

Tootsie No. 1
Tootsie No. 1
4 1/4" x 5 1/8" x 5/8" (approx. 4" x 5" x .5")
Acrylic on Book Page & Canvas Panel
This painting is SOLD.
This fun little painting depicts a photorealistically rendered Vanilla-flavored Tootsie Roll in front of an abstract background. The painting is done over top of a page from a vintage French book, titled Existentialisme. This piece explores a contemporary combination of text, abstraction and photorealism. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the aged French text with the modern pop icon of the candy, and the modernist circles underneath the photorealist object. These elements work together to create a piece that is whimsically delightful! This piece has a textured black border that runs along the edge of the painting and along the sides, making this piece ready to hang on a wall without a frame.

Easter Bunny
Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Photorealism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This painting is SOLD.
This meticulously detailed painting depicts a chocolate Easter bunny in its colored foil wrapper. There is a huge amount of detail in this piece, with all the lights and shadows created by the tiny wrinkles in the foil. I enjoy the process of photorealist painting, as it requires intense focus and concentration which usually leads to a rather meditative state of seeing and painting.
I plan to offer at least 2-3 small photorealist still lifes each week, so check back!

Curvilinear
Size: 8" x 10" x 1.5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract / Pop
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This painting depicts the basic facial features of a person painted over an Abstract Expressionist background of whites, reds, blues and purples. The eyes are overly large, in a contemporary pop style. Curly designs are painted around the face, which add another dimension and sense of mystery to the portrait. I enjoy creating portraits from my imagination using unconventional color combinations as a way to convey certain moods and feelings which are left open to the interpretation of the viewer.

Mark & Sarah / From Abroad
Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Photorealism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This meticulously detailed painting depicts a blue-footed booby keychain, and two Finnish candy boxes. The keychain was given to me as a gift from my friend Mark, upon his return from Ecuador. The candy boxes were a gift from my friend Sarah, upon her return from Europe, which included a few days in Finland. Hence the title of this piece! I like the way the colors of the bird are echoed in the colors of the bottom candy box. I enjoy the process of photorealist painting, as it requires intense focus and concentration which usually leads to a rather meditative state of seeing and painting.

Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Abstract Expressionism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This colorful painting depicts a young woman with an intense and soulful gaze. Her enigmatic demeanor is open to the viewer's interpretation! With this piece I was interested in capturing the essence of this young woman's energy via color. To enhance the sense of mood and energy, the surface of this painting is quite textured.

Relucent Spirit
Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Wood Panel
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This painting is available for purchase here.
I spent 3 months this summer on a beautiful hilltop in southern France, surrounded by lush views and plenty of nature. My abstract paintings have been heavily influenced by my panoramic surroundings as well as my up-close observations of plants and insect life. I have termed my new series of nature-based abstracts my Anicca series. Anicca is a Pali term meaning impermanence. Like the Impressionists, I am deeply influenced by the changes in the scenery around me caused by the changing position of the sun and atmospheric changes such as wind, rain, and fog. These paintings depict the ever-changing quality of nature; its unpredictability, raw form, and constant flow. This painting depicts the magnificent sunsets as seen from the hill - with dramatic colors and beautiful cloud formations.

La Danse Heureuse I
Size: 9" x 12" x .5"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This painting is a brightly colored abstract floral explosion! The style is aesthetically inspired by my keen interest in the folk arts of Mexico and India, particularly in the intensity of their color palettes and their detailed patterns. This painting combines my love for tribal art with a contemporary urban aesthetic, resulting in a fresh, vibrant abstract style that expresses the complexity and multiplicity of modern life through a youthful and jubilant perspective. The color scheme of this painting was inspired by the intricate embroidery created by the tribal Kutch people in India. Several metallic paints are used - gold, silver, copper, and turquoise - as decorative accents which reference the tiny mirrors that they embroider into their clothes and tapestries. This painting may be hung with any side facing up! The .5" thick edges of this painting are painted black, so this painting ready to hang directly onto the wall without a frame!

Medium: Prismacolor Colored Pencils
Surface: 300lb Smooth Hot-Pressed Watercolor Paper
Style: Abstract

This is a highly-detailed, vibrantly colored piece inspired by Mexico's Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. I combined the simplified black outline of a skull with my usual funky abstract style to create an artwork that is vivid, boisterous, and jubilant. I like the paradoxical juxtaposition of the classic image of death and mortality - the skull - portrayed amidst colorful abstract forms and intricate designs, which express the fullness and joy of life. This image is bright, psychedelic, and incredibly detailed! This piece is framed behind plexiglass inside a simple, classic black frame - wired and ready to hang!

On Vacation
Hey folks,
For the next 3 weeks I'll be travelling through Thailand - visiting family and seeing the sights. It'll be my first time visiting Thailand as an adult, so it should be pretty interesting! It is also a topical time to go, given the recent peaceful coup, so I look forward to getting a sense of how it is on the ground.
The last time I was in Thailand I was just a wee little child, and my only memory involves walking barefoot across a wooden bridge, staring intently at my feet to make sure my little toes didn't slip through the spaces between the wooden boards.
Take care, and I'll be posting new work again in about 3 weeks!

Extramundane
Size: 8" x 10"
Medium: Acrylic & Ink
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract / Realism = Pop!
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This painting is part of my new ZenPop series of artworks which combine abstraction and photorealism within a contemporary pop sensibility, referencing spirituality (in the form of abstraction) with material specificity (in the form of the objects painted over top) . The abstract backgrounds of these paintings are archival giclees of my abstract paintings, using UV Resistant Pigmented Inks on bright white, cotton canvas with an archivability of 100-200 years. This series relies heavily on a stream-of-consciousness method of allowing images to arise and suggest themselves. After selecting an abstract starting point, I then choose a specific image and build the painting around the image - in this case, a fluffy white sheep. After meticulously painting the sheep in a photorealistic style, I added a decorative abstract border to the top and bottom of the painting.

Ratiocinative Sapience
Size: 6" x 6"
Medium: Prismacolor Colored Pencils
Surface: Acid-Free Archival Strathmore Paper
Style: Abstract / Photo-Realism
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
This elaborately detailed drawing is part of my new Deep Thinkers series, in which various animals are juxtaposed with evidence of human thought, in the form of mathematical equations, quotes, definitions, musical scores, etc. These pieces depict a zen-like transcendent bridge between conceptual thinking and animalistic consciousness. These two contrasts are united by a careful use of color and decorative design. This piece depicts a small green frog in front of a set of abstract orbs. The main background contains a black hole equation, and the round white orbs house dictionary excerpts. Although this piece utilizes text as a stylistic device, the original context of the words and equations is rather obscured. This piece has a light-hearted sense of floating whimsicality. This artwork is entirely hand-drawn using Prismacolor colored pencils. The paper has a 1" border around all four edges to allow for easy matting and framing.

Size: 7" x 7" x 1"
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Style: Abstract
Artist: Thaneeya McArdle
The theme of this highly charged painting is the mythic concept of cosmic origins. This painting is very detailed; writhing with numerous colors and various designs which symbolize the endless energy and flow of spirit and matter. This is an intricately detailed ink drawing done on an antique book page. The page is from a chapter titled "Double Stars" from a book called "The Stars", published in 1927. The book page is slightly yellowed - I'm not sure how well that shows in this scan. The abstract forms of this drawing are elegant and flowing, referencing chimerical organic forms. I like the way the forms cover the words on the page, creating a tension between linear thinking and fanciful forms.

I am spending 3 months this summer on a beautiful hilltop in southern France, surrounded by lush views and plenty of nature. This painting depicts a whimsically abstract landscape writhing with color and energy. This piece expresses the concepts of growth, life, and change. Many shades of blue and green are used to express the fresh flow of rivers throughout the verdant landscape. Certain elements can be interpreted as the leaves of plants as well as roots growing in the soil. The colors and designs of this piece whimsically express a feeling of springtime and abundant growth.

The colors for this painting were chosen intuitively to create an emotive portrait of a contemplative female. This painting is calm and quiet and radiates warmth and peace. I enjoy creating portraits from my imagination using unconventional color combinations as a way to convey certain moods and feelings which are left open to the interpretation of the viewer.
